One simple trick to stop worrying so much

I’ll admit, in the past, I’ve tended to be a big worrier, and it’s something I’m gradually working on for the sake of my peace of mind…and sanity!

It’s just that I’m one of those people who likes to prepare by imagining all the possible worst case scenarios. It’s my way of rehearsing for all eventualities, if you will. I can imagine how I’ll respond, what I’ll say, and what other options I’ll take if my option of choice is no longer feasible.

But there are times when I simply worry too much.

Have you ever been so worried about something that you couldn’t sleep at night?

Have you ever been so worried about something that you gave yourself a headache over it?

Have you ever been so worried about something that it felt like anxiety was hanging over you like a dark cloud 24/7?

Have you ever been so worried about something that you couldn’t be fully present in the ‘now’ and couldn’t experience peace and joy even for a few minutes?

I know I have.

There are two reasons why we should all learn to stop worrying so much.

1) Worrying brings energy and attention to the very thing you don’t want. To put it another way, it’s like praying for what you don’t want. Remember: the thoughts you think and the words you speak create the reality that you experience. So if you’re worrying around the clock about a situation, then guess what! You’re only adding fuel to the fire and giving your worries the energy they need to materialize.

1) Another reason we shouldn’t worry so much is for the simple reason that worry robs us of our peace and joy. So many people literally lose sleep over their worries. It affects their happiness, it affects their health, and it affects the way they show up in the world and interact with others (i.e. waking up on the wrong side of the bed and being unkind to others for the whole day). Do you really want to let worry rob you of your happiness, especially given how short life is?

So how do we stop worrying so much?

It’s actually simpler than you think!

I’ve used this one simple trick for a while now and it really works wonders.

Basically, all you’re going to do is set aside a block of time once a day where all you do is worry, worry, worry to your heart’s content.

I know, I know. It sounds counter-intuitive, doesn’t it?

But here’s the deal: you’re going to worry anyway. So instead of worrying about your situation every 10 minutes for your entire day, you’re designating a brief block of time once a day (anywhere from 5-30 minutes) where you get the worrying out of the way in one shot. After that, you’re not allowed to worry about the situation for the next 24 hours until your next block of ‘worry time’ arrives.

Here’s what’s going to start to happen:

For one, you’ll free up the rest of your day to just be present in the here and now, shed off all your anxieties, and reclaim your peace and joy. Your mind will be able to fully focus on other things instead of being hampered by your worries all the time.

Secondly, gradually you’ll find that your ‘worry time’ naturally decreases. The first time I tried this trick, I allotted 20 minutes for nonstop worrying. Then, following the rules, I didn’t allow myself to worry about the situation for the next 24 hours. Then when it was ‘worry time’ again, I found that after just 10 minutes of worrying, I got bored! I didn’t want to worry anymore. I was over the pity party, and after that, the block of time kept decreasing until I stopped worrying about that particular situation altogether!

This one simple trick is truly a game-changer, and you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how much lighter and positive you’ll feel when you start using it.
